SO, the baby pants and Danish socks from my earlier post are complete:

I am worried though that by the time the pants make it to the baby they will be too small! So I may end up making something else for little Tyler.

I also broke down and bought some yarns from DTY, basically right out of the box. First I fell head over heels for the Lotus Yarns handspun Camel and decided I was going to make myself a slouchy hat. It turned out really well and I made a sample for the store in a different colorway (pattern available!). The only hang-up was that, having never worked with camel before, I didn't realize how much it would stretch. My hat that I knit to be 17 inches around is now 22. It looks fine, it's cute and just extra slouchy but WOW! So I took 4+ inches off the sample hat, which now looks impossibly tiny but does in fact fit. Knitting is strange like that sometimes.

I also fell head over heels for some Malabrigo Rasta, the super bulky yarn they make, in a color called Laguna Negra. It's a grey base with some brown, cream and gold. Absolutely spectacular. I bought two and knit up one of Leti's Loopy Cowls (pattern available at DTY) which is not only fabulous looking (mine makes me look a bit like ZZ Top, hahaha) but also the warmest thing I have ever owned. Now I feel prepared for winter!

So, that's all I'm going to share for now. This has been a bad year for me in terms of staying focused on 1-2 projects at a time, so I'm not going to count any of my chickens yet as I suspect some may not hatch for quite some time. But, I'm slowly moving through the projects that are half-done and doing my best not to start anything new. Actually that's a lie, I JUST started a new sweater AND I have to do some X-mas knitting...but at least I'm aware that I need to stop starting new things and focus on completing the things that are in front of me! Months ago I fell head over heels for a blue-purple-red "Kitchen Sink Batt" at Downtown Yarns. I was super excited to spin it. But I was also less attached to an idea of what I wanted it to be than I am to some of the other fiber in my stash. This made it a good option for experimenting since, although I am not unskilled, the reality is that I am a novice spinner.

Two-fourths of my batt. I flipped one strip to show the colors of the underside.

I decided to try making a cabled yarn. To do this I divided the batt into fourths and spun four singles. I then plied two and two together (in the opposite direction) so that I had two 2-plies, which I then plied together (in the same direction as the singles) to make a 4-ply cabled yarn.

A cross-section of the batt.

I was lucky to have chosen this way of plying because it served to make my yarn much more even then it would have been otherwise. Although I'm sure a more experienced spinner could have spun lovely even singles out if this batt, the preparation of the batt combined with the wide variety of lengths of fiber and abundance of neps made me decide not to fight its desire to become a sort of thick and thin yarn. The batt contained alpaca, cashmere, merino, BFL, and silk, and they did not appear to be evenly mixed which lead to me occasionally letting a whole clump of fiber through at once (the "thick" part). The fiber was also not well aligned. Now, I like to spin from the fold and have so far preferred less processed, "crunchy", wooly fibers, so perhaps the problem was a combination of the preparation and the slickness and softness of the fibers. But, there were definitely clumps of "U" shaped fibers leading to other unavoidable lumps.

The finished bobbin of two-ply.

Despite the thick and thin quality of my singles, the finished yarn is surprisingly even. Plying hides imperfections well, and the fact that the last plying tightened my singles slightly meant that the thickest parts were not allowed to expand as much as they otherwise would have.

My four-ply cabled yarn.

I will say though that the singles themselves were incredibly beautiful. The unevenness seemed to suit it. However, given the fiber content I thought plying was the right option to make it more durable. And now the question that remains is what will I knit out of it?

And no, I absolutely could not avoid adding any additional alliterations.
But jokes aside, it has been great to have a wheel at home, especially since it coincided with our spinning wheel class at Downtown Yarns. So far I have spun two small skeins on it, both just under 50 grams, one of Swalesdale and one of Shetland. Both are two ply but the Swalesdale is a dk-ish weight while the Shetland is more of a fingering.

The only problem so far with my little set up is that I only have two bobbins, which means that I needed to rig up some craziness to ply my first yarn (see photo at top). For my second round of plying I made a makeshift bobbin out of a pen and a foam disk. However, I found the process of winding from the real bobbin onto the make-shift one just too time consuming. I might go back to winding it into a cake with my ball winder next time and see how that does sitting on the make-shift bobbin.

The Swalesdale I have already knit up into a little girl-doll (technically a "babe," we have a whole window full of them right now at DTY). After I knit her, I dyed the body pieces with tea to add more warmth to the yarn. The original is a lovely grey, but it's not a great color for a doll.

Her hair is also handspun, some things I plied in class, and her eyes and mouth too. I haven't yet knit her any clothes, and to be completely honest I think she looks so good "in the nude" I don't really feel compelled to!

I haven't yet decided what the Shetland will be, but I think it might knit up into nice wrist-warmers. I have been wanting to make some for a while anyway, even more so after my trip to Sweden. Plus they don't take up much yarn.
Lots of things have happened between then and now and unfortunately blogging has not been priority number one. In fact I've had a draft with that same opening sentence on the books for more than two months.

I should say though that the reason (or excuse) I have for not posting has been that we have been soooo busy since April. I started my new job in March and was working 7 days a week until the end of May, something I don't plan on ever repeating. In the meantime we were attending weddings left and right and then in June we took off for a Scandinavian Adventure (more on that below) and now were preparing to heard to Lahore for 10 days for yet another wedding. Whew!

Classy hat and mitt set
No photo at the moment, but it came in handy in Sweden! Knit from fabulous yarn I bought in Asheville that was locally made.

Shawl for Sweden
This is a WILD mohair shawl I made to keep me warm in the far north! Here I am in Ostersund.

Granny Square Pillow
My first (real) crochet project ever! I used Brown Sheep Waverly wool partially separated. The back is single crochet and was made with very plain wool I bought in Sweden. Originally I wanted it to be square but I was unable to find the right sized pillow so it got blocked into a rectangle...

Which brings us to things that are on the needles. I have many projects going at once right know which is unusual for me. Several of them are ALMOST done and were put down because I needed something to travel with and I hate doing finishing on the road...

Top Secret project in Danish cotton
No photos allowed but check back soon!

Top secret item for Miss Vivi (just needs seaming)
No photos allowed but check back soon!

Longies for Tyler Elijah Lucas
These look soooo great! I can't wait to see him try them on! Pattern is an Elizabeth Zimmerman from Knitters Almanac.

Danish Bird of Paradise Socks
My knitting plan for Sweden was to buy yarn to knit these socks straight away and then to use that as my vacation project although I did not end up starting them until I got back. Tylers Longies were my travel project instead. I will do a more in-depth blog later about my yarn haul from Sweden but I'll just say that this yarn is one of the most fabulous things I have every knit with. It is Danish but I bought it in Ystad. The company is BC Garn, Semilla Fino 100% Organic Wool. I bought it in this shop in Ystad. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. And the owner used to live in New York so her English is perfect. Also, it is actually purple, now brown. The lighting at DTY is very yellow... Oh and the pattern is from the Knitting Everyday Finery book by Mel Clark.

Monge Tank by Nora Gaughan.
Ah yes. This is on my goals list for the year. I was hemming and hawing over what yarn to knit it in all summer and ended up making the decision to pair Noro Taiyo sock yarn with a strand of Louet Linen. It looks GREAT. In fact I just completed the back! Here it is a few days ago.

So that's the summary. Apologies for the generally poor quality of my images. More to come soon on Sweden, perhaps some fabric shopping in Pakistan and spinning! I'm taking our spinning wheel class right now at DTY and was lucky enough to get a Louet on loan from Leti! Here's a sneak peak:

Actually it's a lot classier than it sounds. I promise. Er, well, I guess you can decide.

This piece is knit with one strand of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Bulky (Bing Cherry) and one strand Brushed Suri Alpaca from Blue Sky Alpacas, just like my Black & White Cowl.
One of my favorite things about it is that all the shaping is done (very cleverly, I think!) with changes in stitch and needle size. There are no increases or decreases, although I did put a single short row in across the butt. It was necessary, lol.

Whew!

But, I did finish my Peabody sweater just in time to wear it to my new office! Hooray! Here are some pics:
It took me about 4 months to complete. Granted, I did not work exclusively on it, it was my "hard" project and I knit a ton on "easy" projects during that time. I was also sick for most of January, which meant it got neglected. But anyway, I think I can say, with confidence that this scarf was the most demanding thing I have EVER knit. But boy does it look good!

The yarn is Rowan Felted Tweed. I knit it on a size 3. The pattern was inspired by an argyle blanket in the most recent Knitwear magazine. Basically it's a traveling stitch that crosses over a purl diamond and then a moss stitch diamond.

I decided to only do the purl/moss diamonds at either end, and I continued the traveling stitch diamond throughout.

So, dark, fuzzy yarn, at a fine gauge, in a pattern I was doing by sight. Oye vey. I'm really proud of this project, it's beautiful and I think it was well worth the trouble, but next time I won't delude myself into thinking its a good quick holiday project!

Improving my crochet is one of my goals for 2013, and what better a way to begin that journey than with a crochet class at Downtown Yarns! The image above shows some of the swatches we made during class. The little ring of stitches (now a mini dog cowl) was my swatch from our first class, and the other three were made during the second session.

I found that crochet came very easily to me. Granted, this was not the very first time I ever picked up a hook, but I've never been very proficient. My biggest problem with crochet has always been that I need to really look to see where I'm going to put my hook, and that is still a bit of a problem, but I'm feeling much more confident after completing the workshop.

So I made these mitts! They were actually my homework project (the assignment was simply "make something") for the workshop. I crocheted them flat and seamed the sides. They use single, double and half double crochet.

I am hoping this will be my last "top-secret" project for a while. I hate not being able to blog about it until it's gifted! But anyway, I just finished (and gifted) an early birthday present for my dad: a BEAUTIFUL, warm, green and orange scarf from Jamie Harmon's 2-ply merino/angora yarn. This yarn is sold exclusively at Downtown Yarns or directly through Jamie (check out her website here).

This is an image of the scarf in progress. You can see that I am using one skein of various green colors and one skein of orange/yellow/green/red. The yarn is self striping so this section is (from the bottom up) 5 inches green, three inches orange, one inch green, one inch orange, one inch green. I then continued in green to the other end where I reversed the color changes (so it ends in orange).

The biggest problem (I should really say the only problem) with this project is that it was IMPOSSIBLE to photograph. The images just do NOT do the colors justice. The next few very dark ones are the best I was able to get, but even so they seem washed our now that they have gone through whatever filter Blogger uses.

I had more fun knitting this than anything in recent memory. The yarn is just magical. Wondrous. Breathtaking. And I chose a stitch pattern that was easy but has a nice texture and added interest. It is two rows of k1, p1 rib, followed by two rows of garter stitch. Easy peasy!

This week I finished my first ever sample for Downtown Yarns! Rita asked everyone to make a chunky hat for a hats and pompoms window display. I have been wanting to make a snow-queen-esque stocking caps so this was a perfect opportunity! This guy is knit with two skeins of Malabrigo Chunky in Water Green. I added a little bit of white angora to the pompom for pizzaz. :)
I actually had to knit this hat three times before I got it right. The first time the drape wasn't right. The second time it just grew too much and I decided to pull it out and drop down a few more needle sizes on the ribbing. BUT the third time's the charm! I am currently writing up the pattern and it will be available as a house pattern at Downtown Yarns.

Made this little piece in a couple of hours using the same techniques used to make a hula hoop rag rag. Instead of a hula hoop I used an embroidery hoop, and I used yarn instead of cut up t-shirts. It turned out really nicely. It looks a bit like a flat piece of tree stump, only, to be fair it's not quite flat. I'll work on that for next time. I think the trick is to make the object much smaller than the frame. At the end I think I accidentally pulled too hard on each round causing it to curl. It mostly flattens out with a little manhandling. :)
New Years Day 2013! It's time for my annual look back at the year before and to set my goals for the new one!

In a lot of ways 2012 was a hard year for me, but somehow it just doesn't feel like it. It was filled with many big wonderful moments, but also sad ones. Eli and I moved into our first apartment together, a transition that was frighteningly seamless. I participated in the Out of the Darkness Overnight for the second time, raising over $4000.00 (thanks mostly to the generosity of the OKCupid staff and the customers of Thompson Chemists). It was held in San Francisco less than two-weeks after our move and was an wonderful, exhausting, emotional experience. In October we took a beach vacation (FINALLY) and spent a wonderful long weekend relaxing away the stress of knowing I was getting laid off in the next few weeks. And then I got laid off.

I am so incredibly lucky to have a partner who understands the importance of finding the right job, rather than the first one, and I am so lucky that we are financially able to take the time to find that job. But, losing my job felt like someone was unraveling my world. My job was my community. My family. And it was all coming apart at the seams. Luckily, it was not my only community and my friends and family have rallied around to help. They helped me secure a number of little gigs that are bringing me joy, peace of mind and a little bit of cash, and, most fabulously, are related to what I do here at 283projects.

One of my jobs is at Downtown Yarns. I WORK IN A YARN STORE!!!! What a happy happy place is Downtown Yarns. I am so thankful for the warm welcome I've received from Rita and all the the staff. I am even more thankful for the way the community has opened it's arms to me. It has been barely two months and it feels like home. I know people, they know me, and we look out for one another. I've gotten a reputation for being the "vintage magazine girl," and so people bring me things, fabulous vintage knitting patterns they find in their attics or at thrift shops. I am so very blessed to be a part of the Downtown Yarns community, so very blessed, and I am doing my best to make sure I give back as much as I receive.

My second job has been equally joyous but a bit more challenging. I'm teaching little ones (kindergarden and first graders) in an after-school fiber arts program! I love my students dearly, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to grow and developed new skills while sharing the thing I love most: making stuff!

So, just to wrap up all this talk, I have ended the year on a high note, despite the challenges of 2012. The world has been very good to me, and for that I am thankful. And oh boy, what a great NYE! Thanks to ilili for that, it was a perfect evening!

Now, lets take a look at how I did with my 2012 goals:

Overall I've had a productive year, but I think I can do better yet! Here are my goals for 2013:

1) Begin and/or finish these projects in approximately this order. I'm hoping that writing it down will keep me from getting distracted.

Joel's X-mas scarf (nearly done!)

Hurricane Sandy Sweater (most of the way there!)

Headband for Baby Bishop

Green and orange scarf

Adorable vintage sock pattern from the magazine Frances gave me

Fingerless gloves with Buckwheat Bridge yarn

Liesl headscarf

Nora Gaughan's Monge tank

2) Improve my crochet (I'm signed up for a class!) and attempt to make this ridiculous lavender dress (Good Housekeeping New Complete Book of Needlecraft 1971):

3) Learn to spin more expertly (again, thanks to fabulous classes at Downtown Yarns!)

4) Learn to use my loom (looking for a class!)

5) Make a hula hoop rag rug/other non-traditional weaving projects

6) Teach a class! For adults! (Rather than one-on-one) Preferably sometime a little outside my comfort zone! Last night I was so brave and tried a bunch of tasty foods I'm usually scared of, and so I've decided 2013 is going to be the year of living a little dangerously, or at least one where I push more boundaries.

7) Do more with my Etsy shop! Since I've run out of pre-sorted button lots I've slowed considerably. I need to get back into it! Especially since I just got an order!

8) Learn Swedish! Yup, I'm obsessed. Thanks to Wallander. I WILL learn Swedish, and perhaps next New Year will find me bedecked in furs on the North Sea. :D

9) And, yes, I almost forgot, Knit those damn Master's Program swatches. I really have lost steam on this. Although as you can see it is a low priority item for me, I WILL begin in 2013.

Happy New Year!

Many people find themselves inundated with requests from friends and family for hand-knit gifts; others get themselves in a pickle by underestimating the time it takes to complete all the gifts they want to give! So, my rule is generally one to two hand-knit projects a season. Last year Eli got socks and the cousins got Candy Cane Ponies (one also got a coffee cozy). The year before Aunt Meg got the prototype for the Tinsel & Garlands Mitts.

So this year I decided to make a hat for our dogwalker, and another project that must, at this moment, remain top-secret. I'm a little behind, but still confident I can finish on time(-ish).

Here are some pics of the dogwalker's hat:

This is the I <3 Pom Poms pattern, and boy do I <3 pompoms! I've been wanting to knit it for a very long time. It knit up very quickly and is just so damn cute!

The yarn is Berroco Ultra Alpaca. I bought it a few years ago at the Lambe Shoppe in Denver. I used almost the entire skein for the hat and cracked into my second one just for the pompoms. I will definitely make this hat again!

My other X-mas knit will probably be posted in the New Year. But if you're feeling extra nosy it is listed as one of my projects on Ravelry.

During Sandy, we lost power for 5 days along with the rest of Lower Manhattan. We were very fortunate that our water did not stop running during the storm and that we are close enough to Midtown that we were able to get out and get charged everyday. Eli, Harley and I are very thankful.

I went to work only a little bit during the aftermath of the storm, and spent most of my time working on my Peabody. The first night of the blackout I made the mistake of trying to do the large lace panel by candlelight. Big Mistake. The next day I had to spend some time finding and correcting my mistakes. The sleeves, however, made great candlelight knitting so I ended up knitting the body for as long as I could and then when the sun got too low in the sky I would switch to the sleeves.

Later, once power was restored this was still my "Sandy" project and it accompanied me to the Park Slope Armory where I helped those displaced by the storm relax in a nightly knitting circle. I wish I could have been able to attend more often, but the few nights I spent there were a mixture of sadness and cheer in equal measure.

Now, in early December, my sweater is almost complete. The sleeves are blocking and I am a few inches away from completing the body (picture taken pre-blocking). I love this sweater. I love the way the yarn has knit up, it's slightly pilly, rustic texture, and I loved knitting this pattern. It's easy to forget how much suffering was going on while I sat in a heated Midtown office with my knitting, or played board-games by candlelight. Eli and I are prepared for the eventuality of another blackout, we know it will happen, maybe even every year. I just hope that we can make sure the rest of the city is prepared. Too much is at stake. We must not forget. I'll try to think of it whenever I put this on.

I ordered myself some sale yarn for my birthday, brands I was not familiar with. When it arrived I was shocked to find that my "worsted" weight yarn was significantly finer than my "dk" yarn. Then, when I went to begin my swatches I realized the gauge for my worsted project was nearly identical to my dk project. I guess this shouldn't be too much of a shocker; yarn weights are not all that standardized. That said I an incredibly frustrated that I cannot make my original dk weight project, because I just can't get it to gauge!

So here I am now, 6 swatches in, and no projects begun. Wah!Emilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09472294055334705229noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2058610124977034465.post-18864008549451890412012-10-28T19:35:00.000-04:002012-10-28T19:35:47.050-04:00Biodiversity Reclamation Suits by Laurel Roth Recently, on Ravelry, I discovered the work of Laurel Roth, an incredibly talented multi-media artist (and former park ranger). I encourage you to check out her website, because the scope of her work is wonderful and much of it is not fiber related. But here, I just want to share with you a few images of her project "Biodiversity Reclamation Suits for Urban Pigeons."

Roth explains the project on her website: "Fascinated with women’s traditional use of fiber-craft to provide safety and comfort, I have been crocheting small suits for urban pigeons that disguise them as extinct birds, thereby (visually) re-creating biodiversity and placing a soothing cosy on environmental fears."

The Carolina Parakeet, for example, became extinct in the wild in 1904 (according to wikipedia). The Dodo, of course, disappeared in 17th Century, and the other bird I have featured here, the Paradise Parrot, became extinct in 1927.

I really do just love these pieces. I love the humor in them. But most of all I am in awe of their beauty and technical detail. Crochet is so often used for evil purposes (please see here, here, here, here and here for examples, and ok, yes, so the Turkey Coasters are actually kinda cool but...); in contrast, Roth's work is a perfect example of the wondrous flexibility of crochet as a medium and the beauty that can be crocheted!

I personally have a hard time with crochet. Because I can't see very well, I find that knitting is much easier for me (although I'm sure that with more practice I could find a rhythm with crochet as well). But I also find that it is difficult to create beginners projects that aren't totally hideous! Perhaps I just need to work on some samplers or something and never let them see the light of day...

Anyways, I hope you have enjoyed these amazing pieces and much as I have.

Also, for reference, more cool crocheted things can be found here, here, here, here, here, and here. The first two links are actually art, the rest are just cute. Remember that you have a choice, you can use your needles for good or for evil. Choose wisely.

I completed it before I moved (in MAY!!!), but hadn't figured out how to block it in our new apt. We live in a studio and it's nearly impossible to keep the dog from clambering over whatever I'm working on. But it occurred to me that the shawl might, just barely, fit on the table. I had bought some blocking squares (actually they're meant to go under carpets, T.J. Maxx, $19) so I thought to give it a shot.
Here are a few pics of my mitered mitts, my hat and my blue and green mittens.

I love love love Rowan felted tweed yarn. This is the "fine" version. If I weren't on a yarn diet I would go buy some more and make a matching scarf. For now, I'm contenting myself with a hat (which I wear EVERY day) and my fabulous mitered mittens.

You can see in the picture below that I left the thread in the edge of my hat that I had used to block it nice and tight. I actually blocked it so hard the ribbing lost its stretch and that little thread is what's keeping it on my head! Plus, I think it looks cute that way. :)

The blue and green mittens (and actually the hat too) are of my own design. The pattern for the mittens, I'm calling them "Marine Mittens", will be available soon.

They are made out of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool and use about half a skein of the white and smaller amounts of green and blue. A great stash buster!

The only problem with all these tiny winter things is that it's not cold enough to wear them yet!!! I think I need to whip up a pair of my Tinsel & Garland's fingerless gloves to hold me over.

Just have a few hundred ends to darn... :/

Here are a few pics of me modeling it. I'm not sure how the hood ended up so huge since it otherwise fits very well but I think folding back the edge is an easy and very chic solution. Haven't decided yet if I will tack it down or just fold it back as needed.
Nice selection and helpful, friendly staff!) and ended up spending my $50 on yarn to make myself some mittens. I was so very pleased to find out that the tweedy Rowan yarn I had made my fabulous vintage fairisle mittens from is available again! Hooray!

Here's my swatch. It's a sort of neutral Ombre look.

The pattern is the May Mitered Mittens from Knitters Almanac. I ended up pulling out little start (about another 2 inches in...) because it was too big. I have TINY hands, so even though the pattern gauge is 4.5 st to the inch, and I'm at about 6 st to the inch, I ended up casting on the same number of stitches. Its a bit snug now, but not terribly.

Then this swatch is for a pair of fairisle mittens I'm going to throw together. I wanted to make both swatches at the same time to keep my momentum going, but I'm working on the mitered mittens first.

And yes, I have to admit that part of the reason I started these is because I am now finished with the hood of my Blueberry Hoodie and am just DREADING picking up all the stitches around the border...

I've decided that I only get to slack off on this until 1 mitten is complete! And since the mitered mittens call for an afterthought thumb, I will probably just want until the hand if knitted because that thumb is a whole other stressor in and of itself!!
